Katie Roche at The Abbey Theatre

There must be a rule that the sets of all plays set in rural Ireland in the 50’s must heavily feature the colour brown.  Katie Roche at The Abbey features brown in a layer of peat earth layered over a white floor, which is revealed during the action, but otherwise the set and the direction are both faithful to the script and a wonderful new take on it.  The set is both grand and sculptural and at the same time intimate, giving a sense of the quiet indoors as well as hinting at the wide open spaces beyond the walls. It was designed by Joanna Scotcher and Paul Keogans lighting design is sensitive and bold.

I wanted to use sand or earth on the set of Marvel, but it was forbidden by the Project Arts Centre.   This set just proves to me how well it would have worked.
